an extra disk containing all synced folders - does it take physical space on hdd?

first, congratulations on a great, flawlessly working service! you're the best.

There's original folder that i chose to be backed up, this folder's mirror online on sugarsync server and still another disk mounted on xp on my computer it is with the letter S and  this disk.

do the files files visible on this disk physically  exist somewhere on the hard disk as copies of the original files - or are they only 'icons' reflecting what is copied online?

it seems that they really exist as another copy being kept somewhere on the disk drive, but i could be wrong.

Is this solution newly introduced with v2?

Trying to clear ALL data in cloud storage, but 4.5 GB left over (8 Comments)

Summary

I'm trying to start over from scratch, but even after clearing everything, SS reports 4.5 GB in use in my account

Content

I'm trying to wipe out all my cloud data in order to start over (after doing some cleaning on my local drives) but SugarSync still reports that 4.5 GB are in use.

I have used the "Reclaim Storage" command and cleared out all the orphaned files it reported, as well as deleting everything that appeared in the "Disconnected Folders" list. The only thing still around is my Magic Briefcase, which contains about 20 Megabytes of material.

I submitted a report ticket, but have yet to hear back (although it's only been 24 hours, on a weekend to boot).

It would be nice if SugarSync had a "delete everything & start over" option somewhere under the Account page, for use in situations like this.

Related posts:

UPDATE: Learned from post "Uhh... How in the world do you DELETE albums or photos????" (http://sugarsync.hivelive.com/posts/e6de3f083a) that files still present in Photo Album may independently take up space (even though their original source folder has been permanently deleted). Why in the world can't we just delete albums independently?

Environment:

I have 2 laptops and a desktop; call them Laptop-W7 [Win7 Ultimate x64], Laptop-SL [OSX 10.6.8], and Desktop-W7 [Win7 Ultimate x64].

All computers are fully-patched from Microsoft/Apple and are running SugarSync 1.9.47.85531.20120203.

Procedure:

  1. On all three computers, using File Manager, unsync everything.
  2. On all three computers, use "Reclaim Storage" to delete files.
  3. On each computer, use Ctrl-Shift-R (Cmd-Shift-R on Laptop-SL) to reset SugarSync client.
  4. In setup wizard, uncheck all folders. Each machine now shows up in "Manage Sync Folders" with only the Magic Briefcase listed.
  5. In SugarSync webpage, remove the previous version of all three computers from my account.
  6. On Desktop-W7, use "Reclaim Storage" to erase any orphaned files.
  7. On Desktop-W7, delete all "Disconnected Folders" listed.
  8. Repeat steps 6 & 7 on Laptop-W7 and Laptop-SL.
  9. On SugarSync webpage, emptied Deleted Items folder.
  10. On SugarSync webpage, removed all folders listed under Shared Folders\Owned by Me

At this point, I expected my account to be using 0 GB (well, with Magic Briefcase, about 0.02 GB). Instead, usage is around 4.5 GB.

Other unexpected outcome: there are still photos present in my Photo Album. However, their original source folders have been deleted, and I do not see an option to delete the photos from the Photos page on the SugarSync website.

It is using all my internet units - I cannot stop it and it is becoming expensive.

Content

My fault I know. I am new to this and do not fully understand what is entailed, and I certainly did not when I set it up.  Stuff is being synced that I do not want, and also files are downloaded that I did not ask for nor need. I do not know how! .  I do not know why or where it has got them all from.  I moved files from the documents to desktop, but it has found them - even an audio book I "hid".  My trying to sort it has made it worse.  I end up in a panic and pull out the internet key, before it goes over my daily limit.

How do I go back to the beginning and set this up correctly? I thought that  only  stuff in the Magic Briefcase would be synced.  Can I sort it out offline?

I want to use it as a back up, just for this computer at present as my Mac needs repair.  Is there a storage area for documents that have been finished with,  but need saving, and not syncing.

It does look a very good programme, and sorry to be such a dummy. Can you put me on the right path please?

Thanks

Files disappearing from Mac, ending up in SugarSync "Deleted Files" folder... (1 Comment)

Is anyone else having this trouble?

Content

Hello,

I'm not sure if this is a problem with SugarSync or with my Mac. For the last few weeks, folders have been (seemingly) deleted at random, ending up in my SugarSync deleted files folder. Some of the folders I've used recently, some not for months or years.

Is anyone else having this issue? I've had SygarSync for a while and have never had this issue.

What is TEMPMAPPEDFOLDERS now being created and FULL of JUNK in my APPDATA? (11 Comments)

Summary

SugarSync has created a TEMPMAPPEDFOLDERS in my APPDATA and is downloading old files there.

Content

Suddenly I see SugarSync today has got a ton of pending downloads, and when I go to File Transfer Status, I see it is downloading a TON of OLD and deleted files from old synced folders and placing them in some new "tempmappedfolders" directory hidden in my c:\users\appdata folder on my PC.

This is not cool.  SugarSync, I DID NOT ASK YOU to just start downloading old deleted or temporary files and placing them without my permission on my computer.  I've never seen this in the past several months of happily using SugarSync, but with latest builds (and the horrible beta) SugarSync is getting worse and not better.

SugarSync is for people who want to keep things in the CLOUD and synced across computers.  Now, somehow without my permission and absolutely no setting that I can see anywhere, the program has taken it upon itself to create a huge temp folder on my C drive and start downloading misc old temp files here from various synced folders.

THE ONLY folders SugarSync should be creating and copying/moving/uploading/downloading to are the specific sync folders I create.

What is causing this behavior and how do i stop it, as the program is now eating up all the free space on my c: drive SSD with old files I do not want there!

SugarSync used space stats not updating

Content

SugarSync 1.9.57 + Mac OS X 10.7.3

Experiencing a problem about storage stats. I deleted a bunch of files from my Magic Briefcase folder and also emptied everything in the Deleted Items folder. But my liberated space has not been recalculated by SS. So it was 50.5% used before the deletions and is still 50.5% after the deletions. How long before the server(s) make this change known to me?  It has been 3 days since I submitted my ticket (ref #120506-000121) and no one has reached out to me about this problem. My used space stats are still at 50.5%, as described earlier. Thank you.

Hi.

I am new with SugarSync and I am trying to figure out the best way to use SugarSync for the purpose I have. So I have one question: Is it possible to have more than one SugarSync account?? Let's just for example say that you would like to have two accounts: One named "Work" and one named "Private". But is that possible?

New job, former work PC will be deleted - how ensure Sugar content remains intact?

Content

Hi,

I'm considering a change of employer, which means at some point the IT guys will wipe everything from my work computer, much of which is already backed up in SugarSync.

The obvious worry is that deletion of synched material on my former work PC will cause its deletion in SS and on other PCs that share that info.

I know the whole point of SS is to minimize that risk, and I can probably get away with taking no action, but would be interested to know if it's wise to take some steps in anticipation of this move.

Seems to me this is how:

  1. Photos from home PC backed up on Work PC => Stop synching that folder
  2. Body of professional work backed up in SS => Copy it all to home PC, in files that are not connected to SS
  3. Same body of professional work backed up in SS => Transfer to SS Web Archive, so not affected if anything happens to work PC

Is that about right?

Many thanks, Phil

After reinstalling operation system and installing the newest version of SugarSync application I'm constantly inspecting high CPU usage while SugarSync manager is working. Running SugarSync manager also increases CPU usage of Finder application.

I found the following error message in system log:

I posted help request to support team one week ago but have not been answered till now. The problem is actually preventing me to use the application. Every time I run SugarSync application I need to restart Finder apllication in order to decrease CPU and memory usage.

Upload Speed Slow (1 Comment)

My Upload speed is very slow. Is this typical? What upload speeds are you seeing?

Content

I'm new to SugarSync (SS).  This morning I started backup/sync/upload of a 6.76 GB folder (115,000 files) at 9:30 AM - it's now 8:00 PM (10.5 HOURS) and the uploading of these files is nowhere near complete – it appears to be halfway done.  I have verified several times today my 10 Mbps upstream connection – it's fine.  SS's documentation says 1 GB of data over a 10 Mbps connection should take 15 minutes.  That means my upload should have been done in less than 2 hours.  It's now looks like it's going to take 20 hours.  This is quite a discrepancy and not nearly fast enough to manage an ever changing 100+ GB store.

I would like to hear from others and see if these speeds are typical?

Backup sets with filters

Summary

Would be great if SugarSync supported backup sets with filtering

Content

I'm new to SugarSync, being an existing Mozy user who is looking for an alternative solution that supports syncing and sharing as well as backup.

SugarSync does syncing and sharing very well, but one thing I miss compared to Mozy is having backup sets, and also being able to set inclusion or exclusion filters. These are two things which Mozy does particularly well. Backup sets means I can create different sets, with each set containing backup settings for a particular group of folders on my hard drive, and within each set I can configure filters which apply only to that set (ie. unique to each set). The filters apply to folders, filenames and/or file extensions, and can be for inclusion (only backup the files which match the filter), or exclusion (don't backup the files which match the filter - or even a combination of both.

The result is much greater control over exactly which files do and don't get backed up, so that the user doesn't waste valuable backup space or resources on unwanted files.

So, for example, I could create one backup set for my Music folders, but set a filter to only backup MP3 files in those folders and nothing else. Then I could create another backup set for my Documents folders, and set a filter for that set which excludes everything inside a particular subfolder there. Etc etc.

I've seen other postings in this forum asking about the ability to create filters, and I hope that when SugarSync eventually does add this feature, it will be for advanced filtering, using wildcards and applying to folders, filenames as well as extensions, and that there can be inclusion as well as exclusion filters possible. That, along with backup sets, would make SugarSync a true Mozy killer! :)
