folders missing

Content

I synced a master folder that I use often and let it run overnight.  Came back to work in the morning and the folder was still not synced up (only a couple hundred megs tops) and there were two very important files that I use almost daily that are gone.  I need to have this resolved quickly.

Summary

Lost a big pile of data after attempting to bring a 2nd computer on board

Content

I've been using SS just fine on a single computer for some while, without incident.

Last nigt I finally installed SugarSync to a 2nd computer. Attempted to follow the instructions for how to sync across 2 computers. However, the instructions were a) confusingly written and b) not showing on my computer the same as the screenshot in the directions. Realized afterward that the version of the new download was 1.9.50, whereas on first computer, I have 1.9.47. But anyway, seems like that must've been a small version-change, based on the number.

Following the instructions as closely as possible given the limitaitions of instructions not matching software, in the Manage Sync Folders part of SS manager, I clicked the little black X to tell it to stop syncing a folder, because I was supposed to go back in and re-sync it, per the instructins. Somewhere in this process it said it was removing a bunch of files from SugarSync. This seemed like what was supposed to happen, so I let it get about halfway there. Then I stopped the process because I thought it didn't make sense to remove all the files, because then they would all have to be re-uploaded. So I stopped & started it to uploading again.

However, I am now seeing a whole bunch of empty folders on my main computer! I cannot even imagine why stopping syncing would delete things off my hard drive, but that's exactly what has happened. CRITICAL THINGS. None of these missing files are in the Deleted Files section. All the documentation everywhere says that data will not be deleted off my hard drive by SugarSync. I did not instruct manually delete a file from either computer or from their location on SS. This was done BY SUGARSYNC without my intervention.

None of the folders in question are shared with anyone. I am the only one with access.

Adding to the confusion are 3 more things:
1) Some things that are NOT in the folder on the primary computer, are somehow in the matching folder on the secondary computer. I don't see where it's coming from. I was praying that somehow all my missing files would miraculously appear on my second machine, but no dice. However, it is still the case that SOME of the files did in fact appear. Just not all of them. Note that the 2nd computer was largely empty to begin with. It's a relatively newer computer, whose My Documents contained only a handful of files, while the the 1st computer contained ALL my data. There would have been ZERO data conflicting occurring, as I had never synced before between the 2.

2) In the SugarSync Manager, the subfolders of my documents in the left pane, which matches the subfolders showing on the web site, is not *remotely* a complete list of the subfolders that are really on my computer. And I have checked to verify that the ones I'm talking about are not identified as supposed to being excluded. So I don't know why the rest of the folders are not uploading. Further, sometimes (in general) you can see a link that says something like "things in this folder have been deleted, click here to see which," but this concept doesn't help at all in the case of my missing files, b/c the folder containing them isn't up on SugarSync. In fact, lots of folders don't show on SS, and SOME of them did make it over to my 2nd computer, which adds to the mystery.

3) Some folders have green dots on them, and these do appear to have really been synchronized. Other folders have yellow dots, which are not fully synchronized. However, now both computers have finished their uploading & downloading, and the 2 don't necessarily match. Some folders (I'm talking all about subfolders in MyDocuments here), have  no dots at all.

I'm baffled, and my support request that I mailed in the middle of the night last night before finally going to bed generated an auto-responder saying "if you're in a hurry, chat with a support rep on MONDAY." Holy sh*t yes I'm in a hurry, but I need my data now!! If this is the level of support I can expect on a data loss disaster, SS, you'll be losing a customer after I (please god) recover my data.

This is such a disaster on which I already spent hours last night, and now again this morning. I have no idea what to do with myself. There are some data-loss nightmares described on this site. Did any of you have something like this occur? Or otherwise have any advice?

Trying to clear ALL data in cloud storage, but 4.5 GB left over (10 Comments)

Summary

I'm trying to start over from scratch, but even after clearing everything, SS reports 4.5 GB in use in my account

Content

I'm trying to wipe out all my cloud data in order to start over (after doing some cleaning on my local drives) but SugarSync still reports that 4.5 GB are in use.

I have used the "Reclaim Storage" command and cleared out all the orphaned files it reported, as well as deleting everything that appeared in the "Disconnected Folders" list. The only thing still around is my Magic Briefcase, which contains about 20 Megabytes of material.

I submitted a report ticket, but have yet to hear back (although it's only been 24 hours, on a weekend to boot).

It would be nice if SugarSync had a "delete everything & start over" option somewhere under the Account page, for use in situations like this.

Related posts:

UPDATE: Learned from post "Uhh... How in the world do you DELETE albums or photos????" (http://sugarsync.hivelive.com/posts/e6de3f083a) that files still present in Photo Album may independently take up space (even though their original source folder has been permanently deleted). Why in the world can't we just delete albums independently?

Environment:

I have 2 laptops and a desktop; call them Laptop-W7 [Win7 Ultimate x64], Laptop-SL [OSX 10.6.8], and Desktop-W7 [Win7 Ultimate x64].

All computers are fully-patched from Microsoft/Apple and are running SugarSync 1.9.47.85531.20120203.

Procedure:

  1. On all three computers, using File Manager, unsync everything.
  2. On all three computers, use "Reclaim Storage" to delete files.
  3. On each computer, use Ctrl-Shift-R (Cmd-Shift-R on Laptop-SL) to reset SugarSync client.
  4. In setup wizard, uncheck all folders. Each machine now shows up in "Manage Sync Folders" with only the Magic Briefcase listed.
  5. In SugarSync webpage, remove the previous version of all three computers from my account.
  6. On Desktop-W7, use "Reclaim Storage" to erase any orphaned files.
  7. On Desktop-W7, delete all "Disconnected Folders" listed.
  8. Repeat steps 6 & 7 on Laptop-W7 and Laptop-SL.
  9. On SugarSync webpage, emptied Deleted Items folder.
  10. On SugarSync webpage, removed all folders listed under Shared Folders\Owned by Me

At this point, I expected my account to be using 0 GB (well, with Magic Briefcase, about 0.02 GB). Instead, usage is around 4.5 GB.

Other unexpected outcome: there are still photos present in my Photo Album. However, their original source folders have been deleted, and I do not see an option to delete the photos from the Photos page on the SugarSync website.

I want to reinstall SS to a computer that used to have it installed. If I point SS to the folder it used to be installed will it resync my files or will consider them duplicates (as it used to do) ? Will it delete files that were deleted from my up to date machines ?

Storage Usage - Quota Not Correct (17 Comments)

Summary

Apparently I am using lots of storage space when I now have NOTHING synced...

Content

I've scoured the forum and apparently I'm not the only one to have this issue...I've been able to decrease my storage to 4.34GB used out of 7GB by unsyncing everything and removing my computers from my account. I never had a problem before with storage until I started to share several dozens of folders for a short time (that is, I synced and shared folders for a week or two, then unsynced and removed them). I've attempted to reclaim storage and I've deleted everything in my deleted items folder. The only thing that I can think of is that there are hidden, "orphan" files somewhere that need to be removed -- but since I can't see them, I can't possibly get to them.

This is a real problem and it needs to be fixed! If I cannot reliably sync, unsync, and move files without my quota updating properly, I will have to find another storage solution - and so far, SS has been perfect (especially without file limit sizes).

Please don't quote or send me to links to reclaim storage, purchase additional storage, or unsync (for example: https://sugarsync.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/221/kw/deleted%20shared%20folder) -- I've gone through all of those and none of them have helped.

Thanks!

New Computer Hard Drive (1 Comment)

Summary

No Easy Solution

Content

I installed a new hard drive in my laptop.  The old one was sync'd w/ the cloud.  I installed the new drive and manually moved all my folders from the old hard drive to the new hard drive. It's much faster to do it this way vs downloading from the cloud.  But as it turns out, there's no way to tell sugar sync that you want to sync only the updated files on the new computer vs what's in the cloud (from the old hard drive).

THE END RESULT IS HEADACHES AND DISASTER.  First, sugar sync tried to download all the files from the cloud. This would have resulted in me having duplicates of everything on my new hard drive.  Then I tried the merging function.  That would have resulted in consuming twice the cloud storage space because all the files would have been duplicated in the cloud. (one set of files for the new hard drive and another for the old hard drive.)

After struggling for HOURS, I decided the only other option was to re-upload ALL MY FILES to sugarsync again. Let's see, that should take about a week to do 24/7.  You've got to be kidding me.

There should be an easy method to tell the program to view the new hard drive as the old hard drive and continue syncing just the files that are new or updated.  This has been a nightmare!

...and don't get me started on 2.0.

"Document in Use"/"Locked for Editing" appears all the time when it shouldn't (1 Comment)

I regularly use a OpenOffice Calc and OpenOffice Writer docs on two machines. One is my home laptop, the other goes with me to coffee shops and the library. Often it is the case that I receive the above error message, even when I have properly saved the doc on machine #1, closed it, and watched SugarSync do its thing. Then, I can either close the machine #1, or leave it on--it doesn't matter--but I can still not open the document for editing in machine #2.

Testing with machine #1 shows that I can re-open the doc and continue editing as before.

I agree that SugarSync must absolutely prevent editing on machine #2 when machine #1 is editing. But it is a problem when you can't edit on machine #2 at all.

Any fixes out there? Thanks.

When the time changes for Daylight Saving Time, Sugarsync re-downloads all the files unnecessarily

Content

Hi,

every time the time changes from summer to winter and viceversa, for Daylight Saving Time, ie twice a year, Sugarsync thinks all the files have changed, and re-downloads every single file.  This is unnecessary and slows down uploading and downloading until this unnecessary job is finished (which can last several days, on a slow connection).

Surely there is some setting which can prevent this from happening?

Thanks

P.S

The effect is that the computer is slow at accessing the internet for other purposes, and often times out when trying to access websites.  This syncing happens only on some computers, which makes me think it could be a different setting in Windows.  Any help appreciated.

High CPU and memory usage of SugarSync manager and Finder application on Lion Mac OS X

After reinstalling operation system and installing the newest version of SugarSync application I'm constantly inspecting high CPU usage while SugarSync manager is working. Running SugarSync manager also increases CPU usage of Finder application.

I found the following error message in system log:

Feb 20 10:19:46 mymac SugarSyncManager[17574]: CGImageCreate: invalid image size: 0 x 0.

I posted help request to support team one week ago but have not been answered till now. The problem is actually preventing me to use the application. Every time I run SugarSync application I need to restart Finder apllication in order to decrease CPU and memory usage.

Upload Speed Slow (6 Comments)

My Upload speed is very slow. Is this typical? What upload speeds are you seeing?

Content

I'm new to SugarSync (SS).  This morning I started backup/sync/upload of a 6.76 GB folder (115,000 files) at 9:30 AM - it's now 8:00 PM (10.5 HOURS) and the uploading of these files is nowhere near complete – it appears to be halfway done.  I have verified several times today my 10 Mbps upstream connection – it's fine.  SS's documentation says 1 GB of data over a 10 Mbps connection should take 15 minutes.  That means my upload should have been done in less than 2 hours.  It's now looks like it's going to take 20 hours.  This is quite a discrepancy and not nearly fast enough to manage an ever changing 100+ GB store.

I would like to hear from others and see if these speeds are typical?

I'd really like SugarSync to work for me and for other users, but have become frustrated with the speed issue.  I'm also concerned about the responsiveness of support, and whether there is an honest conversation taking place with SugarSync customers about these issues.

This forum does not seem to keep the most recently updated threads at the top of the pile, which means important issues with a lot of action get buried.  I think it would be useful to keep the discussion of Slow Syncing, and Slow Uploads, and Slow Downloads, towards the top of the forum, so that all users experiencing these problems would know that they are not alone.  The "active" thread on this topic is:

Deleting files doesn't reduce the storage percentage

Content

According to the task bar menu, I'm near the limit of my SS account, apparently at 85.7% of 6.4GB.

In SS Manager it says '5.46 GB used | 935 MB free'.

I've been deleting files, from within Windows Explorer mostly, and reckon I should have only 4.52 GB of files in there. There are no files appearing in the Deleted Files section of the manager, and no messages saying that folders used to contain deleted files. I've tried the Reclaim Storage tool, and it finds nothing.

I can't permanently delete the files I can't see. Can you check for orphaned files and restore them so that I can delete them please.

My SS Manager is build 1.9.96.111090.20130403

Thanks.

Summary

Files were deleted in a folder which had no activity.

Content

I receive Daily Summary emails from Sugarsync to detail what has happened in my synced folders.

I have a HUGE number of folders, so it's not practical for me to go through these emails everyday.  However just by chance, I looked at one of the summaries that came in this morning.

To my surprise it listed a huge number of files that were deleted.  There were two different subfolders which were entirely cleaned out.

I did not delete these files. I did not move these files.  WHY DID SUGARSYNC DELETE THEM?  I did not even access that folder within the last 24 hours (and the summary is supposed to represent the latest 24 hours of activity)

Yes, the missing files are still in the Deleted Files folder and I actually had an off-site backup, so thankfully they are not lost.  However, if I had not seen this email I would known they were missing until a much later date.  And then I might not have recovered them.

Plus I have thousands of archived files that are being synchronized.  What if some of those are being deleted too?  I need to go back and use old files quite frequently.  This is VERY DISTURBING to me.

I want an explanation as to why this happening.

This reminds me --- I have also seen a problem, where I copied a file across my local network to someone who was synchronizing a folder (on a different account) .  The file was gone the next morning, and then reappeared an hour later.  WHY is this service behaving so erratically?

Summary

Out of control sugarsync is uploading, downloading, deleting, files at random, changing sync folders

Content

I got SugarSync because I have a number of devices that I like to be able to access my files from. I might add that I have a paid account. SugarSync is becoming more of a problem than it is worth. It's like a virus. I have had problems on an off with it. It is respomsible for completely destroying my file directories and making multiple copies of files everywhere then backing them up and adding to my quota. The past few days have been the worst. It has randomly deleted files, uploaded and downloaded files at will, causing me to go over my monthly internet usage allowance. It has changed the folders that are synced files it should not have. There is no way to stop the file upload/download. I have tried to recover missing files from the deleted folder and am not able to recover them. Online support is typical. ''We will investigate and get back to you by email''. In the meanwhile I cannot start SugarSync on any computer because of the upload/download issue. Technical support is of no help. The web is full of these incidents. I need to find another back-up solution. I'm unsure of how to get rid of sugarsync and still keep my data. There is no way the program should be able to delete files off my computer if I stop backing them up. Every file you back up becomes vulnerable to deletion.
