Last nigt I finally installed SugarSync to a 2nd computer. Attempted to follow the instructions for how to sync across 2 computers. However, the instructions were a) confusingly written and b) not showing on my computer the same as the screenshot in the directions. Realized afterward that the version of the new download was 1.9.50, whereas on first computer, I have 1.9.47. But anyway, seems like that must've been a small version-change, based on the number.
Following the instructions as closely as possible given the limitaitions of instructions not matching software, in the Manage Sync Folders part of SS manager, I clicked the little black X to tell it to stop syncing a folder, because I was supposed to go back in and re-sync it, per the instructins. Somewhere in this process it said it was removing a bunch of files from SugarSync. This seemed like what was supposed to happen, so I let it get about halfway there. Then I stopped the process because I thought it didn't make sense to remove all the files, because then they would all have to be re-uploaded. So I stopped & started it to uploading again.
However, I am now seeing a whole bunch of empty folders on my main computer! I cannot even imagine why stopping syncing would delete things off my hard drive, but that's exactly what has happened. CRITICAL THINGS. None of these missing files are in the Deleted Files section. All the documentation everywhere says that data will not be deleted off my hard drive by SugarSync. I did not instruct manually delete a file from either computer or from their location on SS. This was done BY SUGARSYNC without my intervention. None of the folders in question are shared with anyone. I am the only one with access. Adding to the confusion are 3 more things:
1) Some things that are NOT in the folder on the primary computer, are somehow in the matching folder on the secondary computer. I don't see where it's coming from. I was praying that somehow all my missing files would miraculously appear on my second machine, but no dice. However, it is still the case that SOME of the files did in fact appear. Just not all of them. Note that the 2nd computer was largely empty to begin with. It's a relatively newer computer, whose My Documents contained only a handful of files, while the the 1st computer contained ALL my data. There would have been ZERO data conflicting occurring, as I had never synced before between the 2. 2) In the SugarSync Manager, the subfolders of my documents in the left pane, which matches the subfolders showing on the web site, is not *remotely* a complete list of the subfolders that are really on my computer. And I have checked to verify that the ones I'm talking about are not identified as supposed to being excluded. So I don't know why the rest of the folders are not uploading. Further, sometimes (in general) you can see a link that says something like "things in this folder have been deleted, click here to see which," but this concept doesn't help at all in the case of my missing files, b/c the folder containing them isn't up on SugarSync. In fact, lots of folders don't show on SS, and SOME of them did make it over to my 2nd computer, which adds to the mystery. 3) Some folders have green dots on them, and these do appear to have really been synchronized. Other folders have yellow dots, which are not fully synchronized. However, now both computers have finished their uploading & downloading, and the 2 don't necessarily match. Some folders (I'm talking all about subfolders in MyDocuments here), have no dots at all. I'm baffled, and my support request that I mailed in the middle of the night last night before finally going to bed generated an auto-responder saying "if you're in a hurry, chat with a support rep on MONDAY." Holy sh*t yes I'm in a hurry, but I need my data now!! If this is the level of support I can expect on a data loss disaster, SS, you'll be losing a customer after I (please god) recover my data.
This is such a disaster on which I already spent hours last night, and now again this morning. I have no idea what to do with myself. There are some data-loss nightmares described on this site. Did any of you have something like this occur? Or otherwise have any advice? |
